What is a UID Number in UAE? & How to Find Your Unified Number

Table of Contents
UID stands for “Unified Identification Number”, and it is automatically assigned to you once your visa is approved, regardless of the type of visa you have. It’s important that you know what the number means and where you can find it.

What is a UID Number in UAE?

It is a permanent identifying number given to everyone who gets a visa to enter the country. It’s also known as the unified number in UAE. This number is usually 15 digits and is recorded in all of the government’s systems.

It is issued by the ICP (Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security) or the GDRFA (General Directorate for Identity and Foreign Affairs) as soon as your visa is approved.

Your UID number isn’t just a random set of numbers; it actually signifies certain specific information about your stay in the UAE:

  • The first three digits indicate the Emirate that gave you your visa
  • The next four digits is the year your visa was issued
  • The last seven to nine digits is your visa number

For example, if you have a UID number that looks like 201-2024-12345678, 201 is the code for Dubai, 2024 is the year it was issued, and the rest is your actual visa number.

What is the UAE Unified Number Used For?

Your UID number is used for a lot of services in the UAE. Here are some situations where you’ll need it:

1. Driver’s License Application

If you’re applying for a driver’s license in the UAE, your UID will be used when you open a driving file. It is also a number that is used to track your lessons, test results, and can even help you renew your license.

2. Starting a Business

If you’re thinking about setting up a business in Dubai or any other Emirate, you will be asked for your UID when applying for a trade license. This is because it links your visa to the business registration process.

3. Getting an Emirates ID

When you apply for an Emirates ID, your UID is used to connect the card with your personal details. Without it, your Emirates ID application cannot move forward.

4. Applying or Renewing a Visa

You will need your UID number every time you renew your visa or apply for a new one. While your visa details might change, the UID won’t, as it connects all of them to one record.

5. Accessing Government Services

Whether you’re signing up for or dealing with any government services, your UID number is essential. This helps Emirate officials find your details, or create a new file for you.

6. Signing a Tenancy Contract

Let’s say you’re moving into a new flat in Dubai. When your contract is being registered, your UID number will be used to link your tenancy agreement with any legal documents you sign. This protects you and your landlord.

How to Get a UID Number in UAE?

You will never need to apply for a UID separately. It is automatically created when your visa is processed. So, the moment you officially step into the UAE on a visa, you already have a UID number.

Here’s what generally happens:

  • You apply for a tourist or residence visa.
  • The visa is approved and linked to your passport.
  • As soon as you enter the UAE, the immigration authorities process your visa.
  • When that happens, the system generates your UID number and attaches it to your file.

How to Find Your UID Number in UAE?

There are a few ways you can find your UID number in the UAE. You can find it on your visa, Emirates ID, the GDRFA website, or call their helpline.
  • Visa: Check your visa sticker or electronic visa copy. You’ll see a label called “Unified Number” or “UID No.”, usually located above your file number.
  • Emirates ID: If you have received your Emirates ID, your UID is printed under the barcode on the back. It is also embedded inside the card’s chip.
  • Online Through GDRFA:
  1. Go to the official GDRFA website for the Emirate that issued your visa.
  2. Open the Public Inquiry or E-services section.
  3. Select “File Validity” or “Unified Number Inquiry”.
  4. Enter your passport number, date of birth, nationality, gender.
  • Phone: You can also call the GDRFA helpline:
